In June 2012 an English Roses Masters Water Polo team travelled to Riccione, Italy to compete in the 14th FINA World Masters Championships. The Roses team had played together during the 1980s and 90s on the GB Women’s Water Polo team and wanted to celebrate 2012 Olympic year by entering an English team in the World Masters event. With an age range of 42 – 56, most of the Roses were returning to the game after a lengthy retirement. The preparation of a full year of training and numerous training matches saw the English Roses in excellent form and hungry for success.
The team played in a combined 35+40+ age category against an Australian team from Perth and two Italian teams. After 5 highly competitive games the Roses were delighted to finish in silver medal position. The 2012 World Masters enjoyed the highest entry of teams to date, with 92 men’s teams and 12 women’s teams from 23 countries taking part. The impressive Riccione Aquatics Centre with three outdoor and two indoor water polo pitches has an excellent track record of hosting international competition. The Roses thoroughly enjoyed the team spirit and marvellous competitive atmosphere at the World Masters and have returned home committed to developing masters water polo opportunities for all interested women aged 30+.
